URS (Uretero- Reno Scopy)

  • This is an endoscopic procedure requiring an instrument very similar to an endoscope which is used for breaking and removing ureteric srones (calculi).
  • It is very similar (in appearance) to a cystoscope: but very thin (around 6.5 Fr in size)
  • It is passed through urethra and then introduced in to the ureter through the ureteric orifice.
  • Attached to the ureteroscope is a mechanical lithoclast which breaks and fragments the stone.
  • Indications:
  • stones (calculi) which are I cm in size with or without pain.
  • Multiple stones (calculi); 2 or more with or without distal obstruction.
  • Distal ureteric stones in female of child bearing age.
  • Impacted  stones.
  • Cases where ESWL has failed.
  • Advantages:
  • Highest success rate
  • Definitive Treatment - No waiting for the passage of stone.
  • Disadvantages:
  • More invasive than SWL
  • Higher complication rate
  • Requires greater technical expertise
